The public works yard, which houses offices, utility trucks, and snow plows, frequently faced the brunt of flooding incidents.
Each spring, as the snow melted, an aged underground valve vault within the facility's premises would inevitably flood.
This vault was designed to drain into a nearby creek and was equipped with an iron flap valve for protection. However, over the years, this flap valve developed a persistent issue: it would often get stuck in a semi-open position, rendering it ineffective as a flood defense mechanism.
The facility operators were hesitant to forcibly shut the valve during storms, fearing it might not reopen during subsequent rainfalls. This recurring flooding not only caused immediate disruption but also led to long-term damage. The valves within the vault suffered repeated damage, and over time, both the valves and their associated fasteners became non-functional.
A 24″ WaStop replaced the flap valve on the drain from the vault. WaStop provides 100% protection from flooding during the spring melt enabling the valve vault to be utilized again. Since this installation the public works office have retrofitted several smaller WaStop for similar applications.
