Backflow protection in Bayonne, NJ

New Jersey, USA| Flood protection

The problem

The Bayonne, NJ warehousing site is a newly developed area located on the New York Harbor/Upper Bay between New York and New Jersey. The site required the installation of a new drainage system to convey stormwater to the bay. The bay, connected to the Atlantic Ocean, is tidal and there is a concern of surcharging the drainage during tidal events, storm surges, such as those that occurred during Hurricane Sandy and most recently Hurricane Ida, which both devastated the area.

The possibility of backflow was ever present and required the installation of a backflow protection. The contractor wanted to avoid installing the valve after the pipe had already been put in the ground. The other option would have been to install the pipe, build a cofferdam at the outfall to keep the area dry and then do the installation. This would have added an additional cost as well as more time to the project which the contractor did not want to do.

Solution

WaStop® Inline Check valve

Upon review of detailed specifications and product drawings, the engineer for the project approved a 48-inch WaStop in-line check valve to be installed in the outfall pipe to protect the area from the possibility of tidal intrusion during high tides and storm surges. The contractor was able to install the valve directly into the last section of reinforced concrete pipe while the pipe was still in the storage yard. This allowed the contractor to avoid having to do a wet installation, saving both time and money on the project.

In summary, The use of the WaStop valve was able to protect the area from the possibility of tidal intrusion during high tides and storm surges, and its simplicity and lightweight nature made it easy to install. This solution allowed the contractor to avoid having to do a wet installation, saving both time and money on the project.
