The largest WaStop Non-Return Valve ever installed in Finland

Helsinki, Finland| Flood protection

End user: HSY Vesi Helsinki

Consultant: WSP

Contractor: Tieluiska Oy

Name of the project: HSY Pikku Huopalahti-Vanha Ruskeasuo, water supply renovation

The problem

The areas Pikku Huopalahti and Vanha Ruskeasuo in Helsinki were subject to rather old pipes from the 1930’s and 60’s that had leaking issues and were in need of renovation. As part of the project, a new and larger DN1600 stormwater system was designed to alleviate future potential surface water floodings in the area due to more frequent and increasing precipitation rates along with the possibility for increased new developments in the areas in the future.

The new DN1600 pipeline evacuates the stormwater to the sea and with the risk of rising sea levels a non-return valve was to be installed to help protect the area from flooding. With limited space for installation since the pipeline runs through apartment complexes, roads as well as a bicycle and pedestrian path just upstream the outfall, close collaboration between all parties was required to come up with a solution that would ensure a cost-effective and time efficient installation for the contractor.

Solution

WaStop® Inline Check valve

With the consulting engineering office contacting Wapro’s business partner in Finland, Ulefos Oy to find a solution, a teams meeting was setup with Wapro to discuss possible solutions. In the end, a customized WaStop DN1600 with bell-bolt installation was decided to be the best option for the application. With the bell-bolt option, the contractor could install WaStop above ground in the new DN1600 stainless-steel pipe instead of having to conduct the installation process of the valve at the outfall-site.

The DN1600 stainless steel pipe with the WaStop pre-installed was then lowered in place to connect to the upstream inspection chamber with ease.

The WaStop will ensure an effective evacuation of the stormwater with the lowest head loss amongst inline-check valves on the market and will help protect this beautiful area of Helsinki from flooding in the future.
