Niagara on the Lake Irrigation Ditch

The problem

Niagara-on-the-Lake (NOTL) is a beautiful town with 17000 inhabitants at the point where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario. It is known for its festivals, colonial style buildings and wineries. Water is always in close proximity when in Niagara-on-the-Lake and it is necessary for the orchards and vineyards in the area. Drainage ditches are used to move water through orchards and vineyards and, given the hilly nature of the land, pumps are used to push water up to some of the higher orchards and vineyards. In one application the water level in the ditch needed to be maintained even when the pumps downhill were shut off.  If the water and debris drained back down the hill it could potentially damage the pumps, but more importantly, it would decrease the level of water remaining in the ditches.

Solution

WaStop® Inline Check valve

Devine & Associates discussed solutions with NOTL and decided that a DN700 WaStop at the top of the hill would prevent backflow, thereby maintaining water levels in the higher level ditches.  A headwall was already present so installation of the WaStop was simple. Once installed, sandbags could be removed and the water level downstream will be maintained. With low maintenance requirements the valve will ensure the orchards and vineyards have sufficient water in the ditches to produce their top quality fruit and world class wines.
