Residential & surface flooding prevented in Todmorden, England

VolkerStevin| Todmorden, United Kingdom| Flood protection

The problem

Todmorden, a town historically plagued by flooding from the River Calder and Walsden Water, has witnessed significant damage to its infrastructure over the years. These floods have not only disrupted vital transport links but have also posed serious threats to the safety of its residents.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, a substantial investment has been made in the town's flood mitigation efforts. The third phase of the flood alleviation scheme, backed by a budget of £13 million (equivalent to USD $18 million), is focused on enhancing the flood defences along Walsden Water.

This initiative underscores the commitment to safeguarding the town and its inhabitants from future flooding events.

Solution

WaStop® Inline Check valve

In the flood alleviation efforts for Todmorden, WaStop non-return valves played a pivotal role. These valves were strategically placed within pipes inside culverts, acting as a barrier against urban flooding. A significant portion of these valves was installed inside a flood relief tunnel, safeguarding the drains leading to it. This ensures that even if the primary culvert experiences a backup, the surrounding properties remain shielded from potential flooding.

What sets these non-return valves apart from other solutions? Their design allows for installation in culverts at any angle without impacting the membrane's opening and closing pressures. Additionally, they don't require a flat wall for mounting; instead, they seamlessly seal into the pipe itself. This unique feature greatly simplified the installation process for the VolkerStevin construction team, enabling them to efficiently fit the valves into pre-existing pipes.

For this endeavor, Aquatic Control Engineering provided a total of 108 WaStops to VolkerStevin. Expressing gratitude for the collaboration, Aquatic Control Engineering extends its appreciation to VolkerStevin, both for the chance to contribute to this significant project and for their exemplary project management from start to finish.
