WaGate & WaStop protecting the port of Ystad

The problem

Ystad is a town in the Skåne county with 31 560 inhabitants. The town is located beautifully along the coast and is well known, to many, for the Swedish TV-show “Wallander” which takes place in the picturesque town. You can therefore visit the filming locations, either by yourself or with a guide. Thanks to its location along the coast, there are also incredibly beautiful beaches here. Visit the beach in Sandhammaren, which is considered to be one of Sweden’s finest beaches.

Ystad is also home to one of the country’s biggest ports, which is a natural gateway to Bornholm, Poland and many harbors in Europe. The port has a strategic location and plays an important role for the transportation industry.
The port of Ystad is growing all the time and during the construction of a new staging area for trucks, there was a requirement to be able to shut of a DN1500mm stormwater pipe, in case an accident were to occur in the area.

Solution

WaGate® Sluice Gate

The solution was a combination of our WaGate SPM-P-TG DN1500 which was mounted on the outgoing line and WaStop DN1200 as well as WaStop DN500 which were placed on the inlet line.
In the events of accidents the WaGate closes to ensure that pollutants in the stormwater system doesn’t flow out to the closest sea outfall where it will pollute the water. The WaStop is there to protect against backflow. Without the WaStop in place, the seawater would have caused flooding in buildings around the area. We are very pleased with this project and are happy that we got the opportunity to protect the port of Ystad against water pollution and flooding.
