Protecting cattle and rivers with WaReg

Sweden| Flow regulation

The problem

During the construction of road E22, the Transport Administration was faced with a requirement from the Board of Agriculture that the flow of water from the road should not exceed the existing flow prior to the road's construction. This presented a challenge, as the construction of the road would potentially increase the volume of water flowing onto nearby fields, meadows, and into the river Vesan. This would not only cause flooding and erosion, but could also lead to agricultural land becoming unusable, with consequences for both farmers and cattle.

Solution

WaReg® Flow Regulator

To address this issue, the Transport Administration chose to use WaReg flow regulators, which are designed to maintain a precise and constant flow of water, regardless of pressure elevation. WaReg was able to meet the strict requirements for small flows, ensuring that the water flow from the road did not exceed pre-existing levels. By controlling the flow of dirty water from the road, WaReg allowed it to be directed towards open ponds and sedimentation areas, where it could be treated and purified before being released back into the environment. This prevented the dirty water from flooding the river Vesan and nearby fields, preserving the agricultural land and ensuring that farmers were able to continue cultivating their crops and grazing their cattle. WaReg's high efficiency and reliability ensured that the Transport Administration was able to meet its requirements for road construction, while also protecting the environment and supporting sustainable land use practices.
