Within the Welsh Water sewer network there is a high proportion of low flow toilet. Whilst using minimal water for flushing is good for the preservation of water, it can have a detrimental effect on the sewer system itself. With less flow in the sewer system the risk of blockages increases. Welsh Water maintenance budget had increased substantially due to the need to flush sewer lines more regularly since the introduction of low flow toilets.

To overcome this problem Welsh Water trialled the use of WaStop valves with a higher durometer membrane. Using a higher durometer membrane increases the flushing action which in turn reduces the requirement for maintenance teams to flush the sewer lines.

After trialling the valves Welsh Water decided that WaStop was a good solution to the issues they had with blockages and installed several in their system where blockages had been an issue. Where WaStop has been installed Welsh Water confirms that their maintenance schedule has been eased.
