60 WaStop keep Siem Reap International Airport runways dry

Muhibbah Engineering (Cambodia) Co., Ltd, Lotus Green Team and Siem Reap Internation Airport.| Siem Reap, Cambodia | Flood protection

The problem

Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport serves Siem Reap, a popular tourist destination due to nearby Angkor Wat. It is the busiest airport in Cambodia in terms of aircraft movements. The airport's new terminal was inaugurated on 28 August 2006. Upgrades were undertaken in 2017 to ensure the runways were kept dry during the rainy season.  During rain events stormwater is lead into the stormwater system which drains out into open ditches. Should these ditches be filled water could then be forced back up onto the runway closing the runway temporarily. With over 4 million passengers per year through the airport this would cause significant issues.

Solution

WaStop® Inline Check valve

The stormwater discharge pipes are PVC pipes leading to the drainage ditch. At the end of each discharge pipe a WaStop DN110 PVC (4”) was inserted and affixed. This effectively stops flow back up into the discharge pipes and onto the runway. A simple and effective solution ensure the airport can function year-round.

Holding back the flood.
