WaStop Protects Beautiful Town Square in Rivergaro, Italy

The problem

The town square, nestled in close proximity to the meandering river Trebbia, has experienced a long history marred by frequent floods. Over the years, these floods have left their mark on the original town square, often resulting in inundation. During the town square's design phase, the local authorities in Rivergaro made a commitment to develop a comprehensive system aimed at averting the recurrent issue of public space submersion during periods of elevated river water levels.

However, the resolve to address this challenge became increasingly evident in the aftermath of the most recent flood in September 2015. During this unfortunate event, a surge in the river's water levels led to significant flooding, impacting various establishments, including shops, basements, and businesses. The primary culprit behind this flooding was the backflow stemming from the river, which infiltrated the stormwater drainage pipes.

Solution

WaStop® Inline Check valve

In a proactive effort to address this recurrent issue, the decision was made to implement flood protection measures. The chosen solution entailed the installation of four WaStop valves, ranging in sizes from DN600 to DN800, strategically positioned to safeguard the Piazza Paolo and Meucci areas. The selection of WaStop as the preferred valve type was driven by its unique capability to remain closed, ensuring constant protection for the city during regular conditions, while still facilitating the controlled release of stormwater when needed.
