Prevent backflow at high sea levels with WaStop
After a meeting with Västervik Miljö & Energi, the company responsible for municipal water and wastewater management, the inspection of the municipality's overflow pipes began. The goal was to draw attention to overflow pipes where the installation of check valves was deemed necessary as a preventative measure to prevent backflow in the pipes, for example, due to high sea levels.
One of the overflow pipes to be renovated with a check valve was a DN1200 concrete pipe connected to an upstream overflow shaft. The overflow shaft contains two separate pipes – a rainwater pipe and a wastewater pipe with a partition in the middle. To prevent overloading of the wastewater pipe, the wastewater must be able to flow over the partition and out through the emergency drain.
However, during periods of high sea levels, seawater can flow back through the emergency drain and enter the sewer network. This can result in the municipality having to pump unused water to the wastewater treatment plants, which is costly.
The solution
Installing a check valve in the upstream chamber was not an optimal solution given the chamber's design. Installing a check valve at the pipe outlet would also have been impractical from an installation perspective, as the outlet is sealed.
Wapro's technical sales and design engineers therefore worked with the customer to develop a customized solution. By cutting off the top of the concrete pipe, a WaStop DN1200 with a half-flange could be screwed into the concrete pipe on the inlet side of the valve. Thanks to a unique pulsating flushing effect each time the diaphragm opens, the WaStop check valve minimizes the risk of anything becoming lodged between the diaphragm and the pipe. The result is a leak-proof check valve that will protect against backflow for many years.
Area of use
Residential
You should never have to come home to a basement that is under water, or have to put up with odours from your drainage pipes. We offer solutions that are specially adapted to stop backflow, prevent flooding, stop pests in the drains and ensure that unpleasant smells from the drains do not enter the home.
