WaGate prevents environmental pollution in Ystad Port
Ystad Port is the largest port in Sweden with daily ferry traffic to Poland and Bornholm. In 2016, the port passed the magic mark of two million passengers after an increase in both traffic to Poland and Bornholm. The volume of goods, trucks, cars and passengers reached new records, which is very positive for the development of both the Port of Ystad and the municipality of Ystad. At Ystad Port, the volumes are expected to continue in the same positive direction in 2017 and they are preparing for the future by, among other things, building a new parking area for trucks.
The runoff from the parking area goes to two new stormwater pipes that will flow into the sea. However, the requirement is that there must be an emergency shut-off on the stormwater pipes that can be closed quickly and easily to prevent accidents with oil, diesel, gasoline or other dangerous goods from getting into the sea via the stormwater pipes and causing environmental damage.
The solution
In order to quickly shut off the stormwater pipe, the WaGate shut-off valve SVM-TG DN500 was chosen with an electric actuator, which is operated from a control cabinet. The valve is made of PEHD and acid-resistant steel, which means that corrosion does not occur between the materials, which in turn reduces operation and maintenance. The valve is always as easy to open/close and is equipped with a self-cleaning pocket so that clogging does not occur, which means that the valve can always be closed to the maximum.
After the installation of the WaGate shut-off valve, the port now has safe protection that reduces the risk of environmental damage in the event of any accidents.
