Wastewater plants become buffer reservoirs using WaStop
Since 1966, the Mörrum wastewater treatment plant has been in use and treated wastewater for the community of Mörrum. In November 2019, the last wastewater was received and the plant was shut down. The treatment plant was outdated and in need of extensive renovations in order to continue operating. The decision was made by Karlshamn Municipality that the flow should instead be directed to the Sternö wastewater treatment plant in Karlshamn, a facility that had undergone renovations to be able to receive a larger amount of incoming water.
The basins at the Mörrum wastewater treatment plant thus became empty and unused, whereupon the Karlshamn Municipality chose to use the basins as equalization reservoirs during high flows into the pumping station that was placed there. In order to have as little maintenance as possible, it was desired to use one basin at a time before the water goes on to the next basin, and a solution was started to find a way to do this.
The solution
Since Karlshamn Municipality had previously installed Wapro's products, contact was made and the solution was to install several WaStop DN300s that were placed between the basins.
When the flow becomes too high in the pumping station, it overflows water into the basins and when a certain level has been reached in basin 1, it overflows to basin 2 and so on. Here, WaStop prevents combined water from being released to all basin surfaces directly, which means reduced operation and maintenance in the basins. When the flow has settled at the pumping station, the water from the basins is released again, when the pressure has dropped in basin 1, WaStop opens and releases water from basin 2 and so on until all the water has returned to the pumping station.
This solution means that untreated water does not need to be overflowed into the Mörrumsån River or the sea, all the water goes back to the pumping station and then on to the Sternö treatment plant in Karlshamn.
A successful installation that is good from several perspectives when an old wastewater treatment plant can be used for another purpose and when it also has a positive impact on wildlife and the environment.
