WaStop drain protects from flooding in Uppsala

Uppsala is one of Sweden's oldest cities, approximately 70 kilometers north of Stockholm, with a rich history spanning several centuries.

As some 70-year-old buildings need foundation insulation, "JR Markteknik" was commissioned by "Uppsala Hem". There was also a need to manage rainwater and meltwater to prevent it from penetrating the building.

Heavy rain creates excessive pressure in the rainwater and sewage pipes and in turn results in back pressure. This causes the water to back up in the pipe and can penetrate the basement and cause damage. To avoid damage to the property, basement, furniture and electronic equipment, an effective solution was needed.

The solution

To prevent water from pushing back up the basement stairs, a manhole with a WaStop check valve was installed. The check valve acts as a protection and prevents water from the public sewer system from backing up and continuing into the basement.
