Reduce the risk of flooding

We are increasingly experiencing heavy rain and extreme weather. The good news is that there are ways of preventing and minimising the risk of flooding. Our patented check valves have prevented thousands of floods. We always strive for the best possible solution in accordance with your requirements. To give you peace of mind.

Below are various solutions for flood protection as well as reference projects that provide insight into how Wapro's Inline Check valves have reduced the risk of floods.

The largest WaStop Non-Return Valve ever installed in Finland

With the consulting engineering office contacting Wapro’s business partner in Finland, Ulefos Oy to find a solution, a teams meeting was setup with Wapro to discuss possible solutions. In the end, a customized WaStop DN1600 with bell-bolt installation was decided to be the best option for the application. With the bell-bolt option, the contractor could install WaStop above ground in the new DN1600 stainless-steel pipe instead of having to conduct the installation process of the valve at the outfall-site.

The DN1600 stainless steel pipe with the WaStop pre-installed was then lowered in place to connect to the upstream inspection chamber with ease.

The WaStop will ensure an effective evacuation of the stormwater with the lowest head loss amongst inline-check valves on the market and will help protect this beautiful area of Helsinki from flooding in the future.

WaStop DN700 Short with Bell Bolt Flange

To effectively address the issue, we installed a specialsolution WaStop 50 meters downstream in a narrow, one-meter-wide chamber. Since the pipeline was constantly submerged, a diver measured the exact inner diameter, as traditional access was impossible. Given the chamber’s tight dimensions, we custom-trimmed the Wastop to be even shorter than the standard short version. Additionally, we integrated the reinforcement ring, normally installed separately, directly into the unit to ensure a perfect fit within the confined space.

The choice of membrane was crucial for this application. We selected the soft S2 membrane, designed to open at just 18.5 centimeters of differential pressure. This allowed the valve to function underwater despite backpressure, effectively preventing water from cresting the pumping station’s threshold. By modifying the body, trimming the bottom, and utilizing the uniquely responsive S2 membrane, we provided the only solution on the market capable of operating under these conditions, opening even with backpressure at minimal differential pressure.

For installation, we sealed one end of the pipeline, pumped out the water, and carefully positioned the Wastop. This setup successfully prevented backflow at an early stage, protecting the industrial area while keeping energy costs in check, all despite the complex and restrictive environment.
