WaStop prevents E. coli outbreaks in drinking water
On Tuesday, June 23, 2015, it was discovered that the drinking water from the Everöd waterworks appeared to be contaminated and the municipality issued a call to boil the drinking water. The probable cause was that contaminated stormwater had entered the Everöd waterworks and contaminated the drinking water. On the afternoon of September 1, the boil recommendation was lifted. By then, households in Everöd, Östra Sönnarslöv and Huaröd had been required to boil their drinking water for 71 days.
The main theory as to what caused the contamination is that a broken sewer pipe had leaked into the stormwater system that normally collects rainwater. The heavy rains over the Midsummer weekend in turn led to stormwater entering a pipe to the low-level reservoir at the Everöd waterworks and contaminating the drinking water. Other possible points of contamination have also been identified and addressed.
The heavier rains that occur more and more frequently are causing more and more flooding in both watercourses and pipeline networks, which was not taken into account when the waterworks were built.
The solution
Kristianstad Municipality installs WaStop check valves with rat traps on the overflows from the waterworks/water reservoir to prevent water from outside that may contain bacteria from getting into the drinking water, which in turn can mean that stomach disease is spreading in the area where the waterworks distributes drinking water. The rat trap is installed to ensure that pests do not get in and die in the water reservoir and cause pollution.
