Safe shut-off when every second counts

During accidents and spills from roads and industrial sites, contaminated water can quickly spread through stormwater systems and reach waterways, grazing land and drinking water sources. At pumping stations and other water and wastewater facilities, the ability to control and shut off water flow is also essential for safe operation and maintenance.

With the right flow control and shut-off solution, water flows can be regulated, pipelines isolated and the spread of contaminants limited. Which solution is right for flow control and shut-off?

The choice depends on where water flow needs to be shut off or regulated, the installation design and the functional requirements.

WaGate Gate valve is used to shut off flow in pipelines, for example for emergency shut-off in stormwater systems or before maintenance at pumping stations and other water and wastewater facilities. During accidents and spills, rapid shut-off can prevent contaminated water from spreading further.

WaGate Sluice Gate is used to regulate and shut off water flow in channels, openings and stormwater and wastewater facilities. It is suitable for pumping stations and treatment plants, among other applications, and can also be used for emergency shut-off where contaminated water needs to be contained.

    Small towns can’t afford to make mistakes with the companies they work with or the equipment they install, so BAR Environmental chose corrosion-resistant WaGate SPK – TG 316 stainless steel sluice gates for an immediate solution and long-term durability.

    As with many projects, a slight complication arose during the installation process when the old, brittle concrete in the clarifier did not immediately provide a good surface for the WaGate anchor bolts to attach properly. After a quick application of epoxy in the original anchor holes, the bolts were seated, and the installation of the sluice gates was completed.

    Ultimately, both BAR Environmental and the friendly town of Plain Dealing were pleased with the ease and speed of the installation. Upon commissioning, the shop manager, in true small-town fashion, said, “This is great! Now I can focus on the next thing.”
